American football, known simply as football in the U.S. and Canada and colloquially called gridiron, features two teams of eleven players competing on a rectangular field with goalposts at both ends. The offensive team, possessing the oval ball, strives to move it forward via runs or passes, while the defense works to halt their progress and seize possession. Offenses must gain ten yards within four attempts (downs) to retain control of the ball; failure results in surrendering it to the opposition. Success resets their four-down allowance. Scoring occurs primarily by carrying or catching the ball in the opposing end zone (a touchdown) or sending it through the opponent's uprights (a field goal). The team with the highest score when time expires claims victory.
