description

The city was a fading nightmare behind us, the echo of that unholy wail still clawing at our nerves. We’d outrun the sirens once—or so we’d prayed—but the woods had eyes. Every snapped branch, every rustle in the pines, coiled our bodies tighter. Five days. Five nights of weaponizing silence, of teaching our girls to breathe through terror. We scavenged, trapped, rationed desperation. Sleep was a liability. The thing stalked in the static between radio channels, in the way crows erupted from dead trees at noon. My wife’s hands never stopped shaking—not when she bandaged our youngest’s blistered feet, not when she reloaded the rifle. We’d chosen the mountains to shield others, not realizing they’d become a labyrinth of shadows. By the third night, we stopped wondering *if* it would find us. Only when. Survival stopped being a plan. It became the raw, animal rhythm of our hearts—beat, breathe, fight. Always fight.
