Touch to Start
Turning Red, a vibrant animated fantasy comedy from Pixar, hit screens in 2022 under Walt Disney’s distribution. Directed by Domee Shi in her first feature-length project, the story was co-written by Shi and Julia Cho, with Lindsey Collins producing. The voice cast features Rosalie Chiang as Mei Lee, a spirited Chinese-Canadian teen navigating life in 2002 Toronto, alongside Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, and James Hong in supporting roles. Central to the plot is Mei’s quirky family curse: whenever emotions run high, she morphs into a giant red panda. Drawing from Shi’s own upbringing in Toronto, the film’s concept took shape after a 2017 pitch to Pixar, eventually becoming the studio’s first feature helmed solely by a female director and its second with an Asian protagonist since 2009’s Up. Premieres lit up London’s Everyman Borough Yards in February and Toronto’s TIFF Bell Lightbox in March 2022, followed by a Los Angeles debut at the El Capitan Theatre. While Disney+ subscribers streamed it starting March 11, select international markets without the platform saw theatrical releases. The film charmed critics and audiences alike, earning glowing reviews and a $17.1 million global box office tally despite its hybrid release strategy.
